Air Barriers: Purpose, Technologies, and Challenges

This USG program examines the importance of air barriers in construction. This will be an open discussion on the increasing requirements to control air, water, vapor and thermal to improve a building’s performance. Course will also discuss current air barrier technologies and installation practices that affect performance.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To understand the components of an air barrier system and its principle purpose in the building enclosure.
  2. To identify the impact air barriers have on a building’s energy efficiency, operating cost, indoor air quality and the infiltration of moisture.
  3. To compare air barrier technologies, their uses and the benefits/challenges of each.
  4. To recognize how the integrated air barrier panel can speed and simplify installation, resulting in a more cost- effective outcome with predictable performance.
