The North Texas Chapter of IIBEC and the Dallas Building Enclosure Council invite you to our joint Top Golf Event!

The event will be held at the Top Golf in The Colony.

The presentation this year will be:

Terminal Velocity of Hail and Killing the Golden Goose

The terminal velocity of hail has been assumed to be speeds calculated by the National Bureau of Standards in Publication #23.  The values listed are theoretical numbers based on fluid dynamic equations.   Jim D. Koontz & Associates, Inc. utilized a vertical wind tunnel to measure actual velocities. Factors such as shape and density of hail were considered.  Other factors include barometric pressure, temperature and humidity.

A large part of the roofing industry relies upon yearly damage to roofs from wind and hail.  A trend of abuses by various parties, insured’s, contractors, public adjusters; are having an effect on how insurance companies are now insuring properties.   The trend may result in major changes to the roofing industry.

Learning Objectives:

  • Increase understanding of the true free fall velocity of hail.
  • Increase understanding of the effects shape and density have on the free fall velocity of hail.
  • Open a discussion of the effects of abusive claims on the insurance and roofing industry.

Speaker: Jim D. Koontz, PE, RRC (JDK)

Speaker Bio: Jim has been involved in the roofing industry since 1960.  Sixteen years with a roofing company and forty-three years in the Roof Engineering business.  JDK has worked in over 45 states, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Australia.  Typical work involves roof design, laboratory analysis, evaluation of storm damage and expert testimony.   JDK hold a BS in Engineering and an MBA from Tulane University.
