Building Enclosure Overview of Historic & Ancient Buildings - Including: A Case Study of Kress Building (Built 1880), Ardmore, Oklahoma - Recent Mass Wall Failure and Kress Building Collaps

This presentation is for those interested in the history of buildings and their cladding materials. Dr. Hall will discuss historic mass walls and roofing materials of the ancient world including pyramids, Temples, Ziggurats

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Describe and discuss how the ancient building enclosure industry has been evolving since the first public buildings were built: Pyramids, Temples, and Ziggurats.

2. Explore the ancient building cladding materials discovered from the archaeological record prior to the life of Christ: Major roof and wall cladding changes in the products, the design approach, and the method of installation.

3. Discuss two specific Iron Age (1,200 – 500 BC) structural inventions from the 10th Century B.C., with detail graphics displayed on the ancient Temple Models (Tabletop size miniature buildings) discovered at Khirbet Qeiyafa, Israel. The Khirbet Qeiyafa Temple Models influenced building structure development in the succeeding periods such as the Classical Greek Period up to 19th century A.D. construction.

4. USA Historic Building Case Study: Historic Kress Building, located in Ardmore, Oklahoma, was built in 1880 and collapsed in 2016. Examination of the reasons for the mass wall failure and building collapse will be explored and explained from an archaeological and architectural perspective.
